Coils

A vape coil, also known simply as a coil, is a crucial component of a vaping device responsible for heating the e-liquid to produce vapor. It consists of a piece of resistance wire (usually made of materials like kanthal, stainless steel, or nichrome) wound into a coil shape and surrounded by a wicking material, typically organic cotton.

When the user activates the vaping device (usually by pressing a button or inhaling), electrical current flows through the coil, causing it to heat up. The heat generated by the coil vaporizes the e-liquid absorbed by the wicking material, creating the vapor that is then inhaled by the user.

Vape coils come in various shapes, sizes, resistances, and configurations, each affecting the vaping experience in different ways:

  1. Resistance: The resistance of a coil, measured in ohms, determines how much power it requires to heat up and how hot it gets. Lower resistance coils (sub-ohm coils) require more power and produce hotter vapor, resulting in increased vapor production and potentially more intense flavor. Higher resistance coils require less power and produce cooler vapor, suitable for mouth-to-lung vaping.

  2. Wire Material: Different materials used for the coil wire can affect factors like resistance, ramp-up time (the time it takes for the coil to heat up), and flavor production. Kanthal, stainless steel, nichrome, and various temperature control wires are commonly used in coil construction.

  3. Configuration: Coils can be wound into various configurations, such as single coil, dual coil, or even more complex designs like Clapton coils or alien coils. These configurations can affect factors like vapor production, flavor intensity, and heat distribution.

Vape coils are considered consumable components and need to be replaced periodically due to factors like wear and tear, buildup of residue from e-liquids, or simply reaching the end of their lifespan. The frequency of coil replacement depends on factors like vaping habits, e-liquid composition, and coil type. Regular maintenance, such as cleaning and proper priming when installing new coils, can help prolong their lifespan and ensure optimal performance.
